I know we don’t time the market but…
Main Post:
Does anyone try to time their monthly / weekly investments?
For instance, I have a set amount of $ I'll invest each month. Instead of just lumping it in automatically at each paycheck, I'll look for daily dips and then invest a % of my Monthly allotment based on the daily dip.
If by the end of the month I'm still sitting on cash, that all gets lumped into my investment account.
It feels good to hit days like yesterday where VTI dropped a point (and I put cash in) and then today is up a point.
Maybe this is dumb (and I'd love to hear why) but it feels like it's working well for me.
Anyone else?
Edit: I should have noted that I do have automatic investments from my 401k with my employer. My 401k gets maxed out each year and the leftovers I invest directly (as mentioned above)

People say don't time the market, but they also say to buy more in downturns. How does that work?
Main Post:
Buying more at certain times would mean you're stashing money elsewhere, waiting for opportunities. But wouldn't that be timing the market?
I DCA the same amount every month, basically everything extra I have after bills. So are you guys that DCA also putting an amount into a savings account for months/years for times like these to dump in the market? Or do you do as I do and put the same amount in no matter what?
I guess I'm confused how people buy more during dips, and where they are getting the extra money to do so. Should I be diverting a portion of funds from my investments into a separate savings account for times like this?
Top Comment: There's an aspect of market timing, indeed. The real hole in the buying the dip argument is that the larger your portfolio gets the less impact dip buying has. Say you have 100k invested and 10k cash to plug in a downturn, this can make some difference, but if your portfolio is 500k and you have 10k saved then it's pretty irrelevant, and sitting on 50k starts being an opportunity cost. Value averaging is interesting, but needs serious discipline. That said, I do buy the dip and feel good about it because I'm just human after all!

Don't try to time the market, but ...
Main Post:
... does it really make sense to invest in 2023 when, for example, Morgan Stanley says stocks could slump by another 20% this year?
Morgan Stanley isn't alone in forecasting the market will tumble in 2023, with several other Wall Street firms predicting that the S&P 500 will fall lower before rebounding by year-end.
The market could slip another 8% before hitting bottom, according to Comerica Wealth Management. JPMorgan forecasts the market will "re-test" the lows of 2022 — about 3,500 — in the first half of 2023.
"The S&P 500 still screens as statistically expensive vs. history on 17 out of 20 of the measures we track," Bank of America analysts noted in a January 9 report.
Yet some investment firms predict the market will rebound later in the year, such as JPMorgan's forecast that the S&P 500 will rise 8% by the end of 2023 from its current levels.

Yes. Buy low, sell high. Buying now through 2023 means you will be buying low if you believe their predictions. Waiting until the market "recovers" is the exact opposite of what you want to do.
Can’t Time the Market, but is there a strategy?
Main Post:
I get it, we can’t predict anything. I’d like to get thoughts on this plan.
I’ve ready plenty of forecasts of an economic downturn in the second half of the year.
401k in a target date fund ~$400K 45ish year old head of household, steady wage, good mortgage, minimal debt Potential plan: set a date to move the 400k into a “safe” bond portfolio with the expectation of a downturn mid to late 2025 and continue monitoring during the 2nd half trump’s first year in office. Plan to move the money right back into the target date account or just into VOO or similar if allowed to.
Besides missing the positive days during that time period, please point out the flaws in the logic.

That is litterally timing the market.
Your post can be simplified to "I know you can't time the market but how about timing the market?".
As a hypothetical lets say you did this. Six months later your bonds are down 5% and the stock market is up 15%. What is your plan then?
